CSUN STUDENT ADVERTISEMENT AND

GRAPHICS ASSOCIATION

The Student Advertisement and Graphics Association [SAGA] is the student chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts [AIGA], at CSU Northridge. We are a group for Graphic designers and other CSUN students interested in areas of visual communication. During my last semester at Cal State Northridge I was a co-president for the club.

SAGA provides opportunities for student designers to network with professionals and fellow students for future job opportunities, gain valuable managerial skills, participate in members-only events, take part in a fun and exciting student body of designers, and looks great as a reference on your resume. Each semester, SAGA provides many exciting events, both academic as well as stress-releasing mindless fun activities. We also provide an opportunities for ALL members to get involved, share your input and even lead.

GUEST SPEAKER: BRAVE THE WOODS

BACKGROUND

"We met in college where Brad was pursuing a BFA in graphic design, and Krystal a communication degree. As we grew interested in each other, we also became interested in each other’s careers which led to intersecting classes and intersecting future goals. We told ourselves that someday we would start a creative studio together, and create the kind of work we loved for clients and causes we loved. Someday came, and Brave the Woods was born.

Brave the Woods is not simply a name, it’s a call to action to be adventurous and curious. It is what we believe and how we work. Our work is always evolving as we experiment, play and continue putting in the mileage. But the path to creative breakthroughs isn’t one we venture alone. We tend to surround ourselves and collaborate with talented individuals and companies, elevating our work and making awesome new friends."

CSUN SAGA was happy to announce that Brad Woodard from Brave the Woods  joined us Mar 8, 2018 as a part of our Guest Speaker Series. Brad will be joined us via Skype from his studio.

I had reached out to Brad myself to be our guest speaker for this event and proceeded to make assets for the event.

SECOND ANNUAL SUMMIT PORTFOLIO REVIEW

BACKGROUND

CSUN Student Advertisement and Graphics Association [SAGA] Annual Summit Portfolio Review is a rare opportunity for student; it’s their time to shine and show off their skills outside of the classroom. It is an opportunity for students to grow and learn with the help of professionals that are actively working in the industry.

SAGA has recruited several professionals that specialize in a variety of design fields (from packaging, to entertainment, to editorial, etc.) to look over student portfolios and provide feedback along with insight on what the current industry is like. By taking advantage of this event, you will be:

  • Exposed to industry professionals

  • Given a chance to show off your work and who YOU are

  • Given portfolio feedback

  • A chance to network with fellow design students, graduates, professionals, etc.

  • Free Snacks, Drinks & Event Lunch!

As Co-President of the club, I helped plan and organize the event—along with make designs and assests.

FINAL DESIGN

PROCESS

When it came time to make a design for the event, I wanted to represent myself. Being a huge fan of being active, in style, and timeless—Vans shoes have always been a favorite of mine. I decided to illustrate my favorite set of hight tops with the intention of "Take a walk in my shoes." I felt this was perfect for the event because industry professionals were once in my place, along with my fellow class mates.

EXPANSION WITH PERSONAL BRANDING

Having personalized this design, I decided to incorporate it as a part of my own branding and expanded on it by making stickers and prints.
